Todd Parnell, the Richmond Flying Squirrels' vice president and COO, was named Minor League Executive of the Year by Baseball America on Monday. The Squirrels' front office now has two winners of the award.
Chuck Domino, the Double-A franchise's chief executive manager, received Baseball America's honor in 2003, while general manager of the Reading Phillies.
Parnell helped the Squirrels average 6,626 at home, tops in the Eastern League, in 2010, the Double-A franchise's first season in Richmond. The Squirrels averaged 6,679 last season. That was second in the EL. The award, in general, recognizes executives who impact their franchises in a highly positive way.
"People have noticed, Baseball America noticed, what we've done here in Richmond and the fact that the community and the team have bonded in a most unique, special way," Parnell said. "This kind of interaction between a fan base and a baseball team, it happens around the country, but it doesn't really happen like it happens here."
Parnell added that the award is "a team effort, from all of our owners, to (front-office members), to game-day employees, to the interns, to the players."
