Former big-leaguer Bill Buckner will be the featured guest at the second annual Richmond Flying Squirrels Hot Stove Banquet, on Feb. 1 at the Siegel Center.
Buckner, 62, broke into the majors at 19 in 1969, and played 22 seasons with the Dodgers, Cubs, Red Sox, Angels and Royals. Though the first baseman/left fielder collected 2,715 hits, drove in 1,208 runs and finished with a career batting average of .289, Buckner is primarily remembered for his error in the 1986 World Series.
Mookie Wilson of the New York Mets hit a grounder to first that went through Buckner's legs in Game 6, on Oct. 25, 1986. The run that scored on the play completed the Mets' comeback win. New York went on to capture the World Series title.
The Squirrels will honor ex-big-leaguer Johnny Grubb, the Meadowbrook High School baseball coach, with the Richmond Baseball Impact (RBI) Award.
Former big-league closer Billy Wagner will also be a guest at the event, as will Pat O'Conner, president of Minor League Baseball, and Joe McEacharn, president of the Eastern League. Flying Squirrels manager Dave Machemer and pitching coach Ross Grimsley will attend, along with former Richmond players Daryl Maday and Johnny Monell.
