Richmond police were investigating an armed assault today that injured a man in the Fairfield Court public-housing project.
The assault was reported at 1:09 p.m. at an apartment in the 2100 block of Fairfield Avenue, and initial calls were that a man had been shot in the head. The first officers on the scene said the victim was conscious, and it turned out he had been struck in the head with a rifle.
Police said the rifle had fired during the assualt but did not strike the man.
Police said there were believed to have been two suspects who ran out a back door of the apartment. One suspect was described as a black male who was 6 feet, 4 inches tall with close-cropped hair and wearing a black vest and khaki pants.
