LIFE NOTESStacy Hawkins Adams By the time you read this column I'll be back in Virginia, but it was written during a recent business trip to California for a writers conference. On the ride from the San Jose airport to Mount Hermon, we authors and editors traded stories about how our children manage when we travel for business. Several of us on the airport shuttle had children in elementary or middle school, and the consensus was that as long as we call often and take care of their personal and social needs before boarding planes or hitting the highway, the kids tend to handle our occasional absences well.

Given the amounts of snow Virginia experienced this winter, it's likely that more than a few children and parents were thrilled to greet the arrival of spring yesterday. It was nice to have a good excuse to do nothing but watch weather reports, catch up on movies and reading, and relax. The cookie baking and snowman making did my soul, and my children's, some good.

Pause for a moment and remember how you played as a child. Did you make mud pies, build forts, hold tea parties with imaginary friends or play kickball, baseball or some other sport in the backyard or a nearby empty lot? Whatever you did to "make" your own fun, do your children have similar opportunities?
