Flu is unpredictable. Get ready to hear that a lot in the next weeks and months.

Some highlights from the CDC briefing:

•Children are at risk of developing secondary bacterial infections after getting flu. So if a child (or anyone) who has flu and seems to be on the mend and then gets sick again with fever, it could be a secondary infection such as staph or pneumonia. Get treatment promptly. A CDC report examines H1N1-associated deaths of children from April to August of this year. Some specifics:
7 (or 19%) were under age 5
24 (or 67% had one or more high-risk condition, including cerebral palsy and chronic lung disease
10 had lab-confirmed bacterial co-infections.
42 percent were non-Hispanic white, 33 percent were Hispanic,

•Flu annually in the U.S. kills about 50 to more than 100 children.

•Schools will be an important location to give vaccine in many parts of the country.
