Tyler Whitley reports:
Common Sense Virginia, an organization set up and financed by the Democratic Governors Association to attack Republican Bob McDonnell, has launched a “No-Jobs-Bob” clock on its Web site.
The clock tracks the number of days, hours, minutes and seconds since the GOP gubernatorial candidate called himself the “jobs governor” in a television commercial.
The organization has already spent about $2 million attacking McDonnell, and today is pocketing another $750,000 from DGA.
According to the Virginia Public Access Project, an on-line watchdog of money in politics, DGA just kicked the additional cash to Common Sense Virginia.
The latest handout pushes DGA’s commitment to the anti-McDonnell political-action committee to nearly $3 million.
The Common Sense Virginia website is http://www.TheRealBobMcDonnell.com.
Tucker Martin, a spokesman for McDonnell, said his boss’ energy and higher-education plans are designed to create jobs, so “the clock gimmick should stop at a grand total of .00 seconds.”
McDonnell is fighting back—on-line.
This afternoon, he circulated to supporters and reporters what campaign manager Phil Cox describes in an e-mail as a “sneak peak” of McDonnell’s next TV spot. Cox also is asking for contributions to help pay for it.
In the spot, McDonnell—speaking to camera—says that the key to creating jobs is limited regulation, controls on lawsuits and the state’s prohibition on compulsory union membership.
Jobs: It’s a four-letter word that has been the centerpiece of Terry McAuliffe’s bid for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination and—a shot at McDonnell this fall.
