Del. G. Manoli Loupassi, R-Richmond, is the latest lawmaker to ask Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli to answer questions related to funding of the Patrick Henry School of Science and Arts, a public charter school created through a contract with the Richmond School Board.
He follows a string of Richmond area politicians who are lining up behind the school, which would be the only public elementary charter school in the state if it opens as scheduled in July.
Del. Joseph D. Morrissey, D-Henrico, previously requested Cuccinelli’s opinion on funding provisions, Richmond City Councilman E. Martin Jewell inked a letter to the Richmond School Board expressing his “deep concern” over lingering issues that could prevent the school from opening and Gov. Bob McDonnell has signed on to attend a fundraiser at the South Richmond site.
But school organizers, since signing a contract in 2008, have struggled to raise enough money.
The school is now the subject of much political wrangling at a time when McDonnell is pushing his public charter school law reforms through the General Assembly.
Read more about the back and forth here.
The fact is that this is more than just Patrick Henry. Richmond public schools are in violation of federal ADA laws.
