The temperature isn’t the only thing rising in the firecracker-hot congressional race in South Hampton Roads’ 2nd District.
The Republican Party of Virginia is doing its bit for Scott Rigell, the millionaire car dealer who’s taking on freshman Democrat Glenn Nye.
RPV has just released a video hit piece that lets Nye have it over federal stimulus spending. It’s a sign that state Republicans believe the best way to take out Democrats is to tie them to President Barack Obama, whose popularity has fallen in Virginia, where he won convincingly in 2008.
The spot can be seen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qc_j4HdgdwE
Nye was elected to Congress on Obama’s coatttails, knocking off Republican Thelma Drake. But because Obama isn’t on the ballot, Republicans are betting Nye is more vulnerable—potentially denied such important votes as those of African-Americans and organized labor.
But Rigell, too, has to worry about the company he keeps—or doesn’t.
Seems that he punted on a chance to share the stage this past weekend with Sarah Palin, the Republican vice-presidential candidate in 2008. Palin appeared in Norfolk at a conservative rally sponsored by, among others, Rigell’s care dealership.
