Rigell brings in Rep. Pete Sessions

Scott Rigell, the Republican challenger to Rep. Glenn Nye, D-2nd, is bringing Rep. Pete Sessions, R-Texas, the National Republican Congressional Committee chairman, to the district for a dinner fundraiser.

The $250-a-ticket event dubbed a dinnertime “discussion on the state of our country” will be held Saturday at the Cavalier Yacht & Country Club.

Sessions, as chairman of the NRCC, is working to boost the number of Republicans in the House of Representatives. He also sits on the House Rules Committee.

Rigell is raising money to try to catch up to Nye. In the latest campaign finance filing, Nye had $1.27 million on hand as of June 30 to Rigell’s $226,970. Rigell, a car dealer and longtime friend of Gov. Bob McDonnell, spent money pulling through a party primary with five opponents to secure the GOP nomination.

The fundraising invitation sent by the Rigell camp says Sessions’ goals include advancing job creation, providing quality education, lowering taxes, reducing teen drug use and guaranteeing the retirement security of every generation of Americans.

“Noting that character does matter, he believes that no elected official is above the law and must be accountable for his actions,” the release reads.

Then, on Aug. 3, Rigell has a luncheon discussion on healthcare reform with Rep. Charles Boustany, Jr., M.D., R-LA, at the Town Center City Club for another $250 a person. Boustany was elected to Congress in 2004 after a career as a cardiothoracic surgeon.
