Poll gauges interest on immigration, health care

We told you this morning about a new poll showing Bob McDonnell with a 64 percent approval rating in Virginia, which is considerably better than how Virginians feel about President Barack Obama.

The Rasmussen poll of 500 likely Virginia voters conducted July 18 shows that 49 percent approve of the job Obama is doing as president, while 50 percent disapprove. This is virtually unchanged from February.

Of those who approve of McDonnell’s job performance, 29 percent strongly approve, while 13 percent of the 33 percent who disapprove strongly disapprove.

But there’s a lot of other information to chew on in this poll. For example: 56 percent of those polled favor repeal of the health-care law, while 41 percent oppose repeal. Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli is suing the federal government over the law with McDonnell’s blessing, and it’s interesting to see a poll trying to gauge public support.

Also, it shows that 51 percent favor passage of an immigration law such as Arizona’s, while 34 percent oppose passage. Efforts to move Virginia’s immigration laws closer to Arizona’s have been unsuccessful in the General Assembly in recent years. But there is a renewed push coming from Prince William County Board of Supervisor Chairman Corey Stewart through his “Virginia Rule of Law Act” campaign to enhance police power to capture, detain and help deport criminal aliens, among other things.
