Following weekend press alleging that Democratic party leaders might cut resources to Rep. Tom Perriello if things don’t look good for him, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee released a poll today showing the 5th district race in a dead heat.
The Global Strategy Group poll puts Perriello within the margin of error against Republican state Sen. Robert Hurt—42 to 44 percent. Independent candidate Jeffery Clark received 6 percent.
The poll surveyed 400 likely voters on August 24-26 and has a margin of error of +/- 4.9 percent.
This survey shows a significantly closer race than recent polls released by SurveyUSA, which pegged the contest last week at Hurt: 61 percent, Perriello: 35 percent.
The numbers released today “confirm what every reputable pollster has shown – this race is neck and neck,” said Jesse Ferguson, Southern Regional press secretary at the DCCC.
The New York Times ran a story over the weekend about Democratic party leaders “preparing a brutal triage” of their members to try and save enough seats to maintain a majority in the U.S. House of Representatives.
It lists Perriello’s re-election bid as one that “could quickly move out of their reach.”
DCCC Chairman Chris Van Hollen this weekend rejected the notion that the party has decided to stop allocating resources to the campaigns mentioned.
“The members of Congress referenced in the article are all running strong campaigns focused on their solid records and drawing sharp distinctions between themselves and their opponents on the key issues at stake in this election.”
But, he adds, “Every campaign cycle the DCCC and other campaign committees face difficult resource allocation decisions and this election cycle is no different.”
“The numbers released today “confirm what every reputable pollster has shown – this race is neck and neck,” said Jesse Ferguson, Southern Regional press secretary at the DCCC.”
LOL. You are smoking crack, Jesse, if you think this race is close. I suggest you look at a few polls of LIKELY VOTERS and maybe take some time dissecting which party’s members will WALK THROUGH FIRE to vote before making such inane and ridiculous comments. 8 more weeks until Dems get sent packing.
