Morrissey unhappy with selection process

If Brian Moran is the designated heir to the chairmanship of the Democratic Party of Virginia, it apparently isn’t in consultation with some lawmakers up for re-election next year.

Del. Joe Morrissey, D-Henrico, has fired off a letter to all state Democratic lawmakers expressing his displeasure with the selection process for the successor of C. Richard Cranwell.  He points out that the next chairman will lead during their re-election bids—all 140 seats are up next year.

Morrissey cites news accounts that former Govs. Mark R. Warner and Timothy M. Kaine are backing Moran as Cranwell’s successor.

“With due respect to former Govs. Mark Warner and Tim Kaine, I think they should have tried to determine what the roughly 5 dozen Democratic lawmakers who are up for re-election next year thought about the next State Party Chairman,” he writes. “Sen. Warner doesn’t run again until 2014 and Gov. Kaine is focused - and rightfully so - on the 2010 Federal Elections. But we are all up for re-election next year. Have any of you been consulted?”

Morrissey insists that he has nothing against Moran and emphasizes that he supported Moran in his 2009 gubernatorial primary bid. And he says he’s not angling for the chairmanship.

But he thinks the person who wants the job should share their vision with state lawmakers. The party’s State Central Committee will elect a new chairperson.

“The paramount responsibility of the next Democratic Party Chair is to increase (hopefully by one or two seats) the Democratic majority in the State Senate. Similarly, the next Chairman should be ‘laser-like’ focused on preventing any additional slippage in the House Caucus,” he writes.

“Indeed, there are democratic members of the House who are in desperate need of raising funds so as to maintain their respective seats. Accordingly, raising funds and defending core democratic principles should be the main objective of the next Party Chair.”

Morrissey said he recognizes that Warner and Kaine, as former governors, are used to dictating the party chair.

“However, the current environment is different. This is not Harry Bryd’s Democratic Party; it is the people’s Democratic Party. We, the House and Senate Democrats, are relevant and cannot and should not be taken for granted.”
