Gov. Bob McDonnell is dishing out more cash from his inaugural fund, the latest a contribution of $5,000 to be given tonight to the Barter Theatre in Abingdon.
McDonnell will give the donation during his visit, in which he’ll see “Evening with an Astronaut: Harrison “Jack” Schmitt.” (Harrison Schmitt is a former U.S. Senator, and the last of the Apollo astronauts to step foot on the moon.)
State law prevents statewide office holders from rolling inaugural fund surpluses into their political action committee fund. The remaining money must be donated to a nonprofit organization. McDonnell has about $100,000 to donate after raising more than his $1.5 million goal.
The governor’s already given $10,000 to the nonprofit Virginia Public Access Project and $25,000 to the Patrick Henry School of Science and Arts, a charter school struggling to open in south Richmond.
Announcements on additional donations will be made in the coming weeks and months through McDonnell’s PAC, Opportunity Virginia.
“The Barter Theatre has been a significant part on our Commonwealth’s theatrical and cultural history since it opened during the Great Depression in 1933, allowing patrons to exchange food for admission,” McDonnell said today.
“Designated the State Theatre of Virginia in 1946, the Barter Theatre has remained a staple of the theatrical landscape in Virginia and the nation ever since. I am pleased to be able to help support such a fine institution, one that has continued to have such a positive influence on so many of our citizens.”
