We told you this morning that Gov. Bob McDonnell would appoint Craig Burns as acting state tax commissioner and Cynthia B. Jones as director of the Virginia Health Reform Initiative but the administration today also announced Dr. Gregg A. Pane as director of the Division of Medical Assistance Services.
Burns, a 22-year state employee, is currently serving as deputy secretary of finance. Burns fills in after the unexpected death this week of Janie Bowen. Before being named tax commissioner, Bowen had briefly served as deputy secretary of finance under then-Gov. Timothy M. Kaine.
Jones has spent 31 years working in various health care positions in the state. More than 20 years was with the Department of Medical Assistance Services, where she last served as interim director.
Pane is currently director of the National Health Care Preparedness Programs for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. He served for three years as director of the D.C. Health Department under former Mayor Anthony Williams.
The Washington Post in 2007 reported that Pane was fired by current D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty because the mayor wanted a “more aggressive public health strategy.”
