Gov. Bob McDonnell has canceled his daily activities to accompany his wife, Maureen, to her father’s side.
Maureen McDonnell’s father, Frank Gardner, has been seriously ill for some time, and his health has apparently taken a severe turn.
The governor and first lady around noon Saturday left The Homestead, where McDonnell was attending a two-day gathering organized for his political supporters and friends, to travel to Northern Virginia and be with his wife’s father.
The first lady and her siblings have been tending to Gardner, taking turns visiting and spending time with the World War II veteran.
Maureen, one of nine children, lost her mother in the midst of the governor’s gubernatorial campaign.
The governor was scheduled Saturday afternoon to ceremonially sign legislation in Crozet increasing funding for the Virginia Wine Promotion Fund.
