Gov. Bob McDonnell has appointed Del. Matt Lohr, a Republican from Harrisonburg, to serve as Commissioner of the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.
“Virginia’s farms don’t just grow food; they also provide critically important jobs and revenue for our Commonwealth,” McDonnell said in announcing the appointment. “I want an aggressive, experienced leader to head up the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. It is a crucial agency to the future prosperity of our state.”
Lohr is in his third term in the House of Delegates representing Harrisonburg and sections of Rockingham County.
He was born and raised on a designated “Century Farm,” meaning his family has owned the land for more than 100 years, according to McDonnell’s office. He was active in the FFA organization in high school and went on to serve as the state FFA president and national FFA vice president. During those years of service, he deferred college and traveled the country.
After graduating from Virginia Tech, Lohr and his wife, Andrea, joined his family’s farming operation.
Secretary of Agriculture and Forestry Todd P. Haymore, said Lohr’s background will “complement the domestic and global marketing and development efforts that Gov. McDonnell and I are focusing on to help create jobs and more opportunities for our agricultural and forestry producers.”
The department Lohr will lead is responsible for more than 60 laws and 70-plus regulations relating to consumer protection and the promotion of agriculture. It consists of more than 500 employees in offices throughout Virginia and in Hong Kong.
