Howell disputes job loss figures

Speaker of the House William J. Howell, R-Stafford, has sent a letter to constituents disputing “inaccurate information” on job loss estimates from the Virginia Education Association.

In the two-page letter that was shared with the Republican caucus as an example for other lawmakers to use in communications to their districts, Howell said job loss estimates of 34,000 put forth by the VEA are “unfounded.”

He explains that public K-12 education has largely been protected in past budget cuts, and breaks down the impact on his district.

VEA lobbyist Robley Jones said the job loss number that Howell cites in his March 3 letter was generated in response to Gov. Bob McDonnell’s proposed cut to education, which was larger than that of the House and Senate in their spending plans.

The VEA estimates 22,244 K-12 jobs would be lost as a consequence of the House budget and 14,648 jobs would be lost as a consequence of the Senate budget.
