Terry McAuliffe has pulled away from his rivals for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination, taking a 10 point lead over Brian Moran in a poll released today.

McAuliffe is now at 30 percent; Moran at 20 percent; Sen. R. Creigh Deeds at 14 percent, according to a survey by Public Policy Polling.

One thing, however, that hasn’t changed after three months of polling showing the contest in a statistical tie, is the chunk of undecided voters.

According to PPP, 36 percent of respondents were undecided, and even among those with a preference, 41 percent said they could change their minds by the June 9 primary. That means 60 percent of the electorate is left to entice between now and then.

Deeds just started running two TV ads yesterday; McAuliffe, a former Democratic National Committee chairman, has been running TV spots and currently has one airing about energy. Moran has not aired TV ads, but has run radio spots.

PPP surveyed 583 likely primary voters from May 1 to 3, and the poll has a margin of error of +/- 4.1 percent.

McAuliffe has a lead of at least 20 points in the Tidewater region, greater Richmond, and Southside, according to PPP. He’s also built a strong lead with African Americans.

In the Lieutenant Governor’s race, Jody Wagner holds a lead at 18 percent, compared to 7 percent for Michael Signer and 6 percent for Jon Bowerbank.

Mr McAuliffe:

Don’t you think it is strange that your advertising of the wind power, on the waters of
Virginia, being done in a gasoline or diesel boat
is sort of a laugh? Why not use the wind power in
a sail boat?
