Budget overview posted

In the early morning hours, House and Senate budget conferees agreed on a new spending plan.

It happened around 1 a.m.—past our print deadline and most people’s bedtime—but details of the $70 billion two-year budget will be revealed this afternoon. You can view the 48-page conference report overview by going to http://hac.virginia.gov and clicking on the links under “What’s New.”

House Republicans, first with a caucus briefing, barred the press and public from hearing details, according to a recent AP dispatch. House Democrats and the Senate will be briefed this afternoon as well, and then both chambers are slated to take a final vote sometime this evening. They go into session at 5 p.m.

The budget vote will be the final action for lawmakers in this year’s regular session, which as of today is into one day of overtime.
