Notes from Jim Zorn’s weekly press conference:

—Updating a previous item, punter Durant Brooks has a quad strain in his right leg which he has been playing through recently, though Zorn said the decision to bring punters in to audition was made separate from that injury news.

“His position is in jeopardy because of performance, not because of injury,“ Zorn said. “That’s very fair to say.“

New punters will be brought in Tuesday to try out, though if the Redskins don’t find somebody they like they may stick with Brooks. Zorn emphasized that Brooks has been kicking well in practice, just not in games. The new punter will also have to have holding experience, as the Redskins use the punter, not the backup kicker, to hold on field goals.

—A preliminary check of the injury list shows that almost all the banged up players should be OK. The biggest question mark right now is running back Ladell Betts, who has a sprained knee and is getting tested right now. If he can’t go, Rock Cartwright will get those carries in practice. That could be a big break for Cartwright, as Betts has given Clinton Portis regular breathers throughout the season.

Chris Samuels, Chris Horton, Fred Smoot and James Thrash will all, according to Zorn, be OK after getting banged up Sunday. Jason Taylor is also feeling healthy after playing Sunday.

Stephon Heyer remains out, with Jon Jansen taking his place at right tackle. Zorn said that “it’s a very competitive situation, and Jansen has played well. That will be something we’ll talk about.“ Sounds like Jansen may be playing his way into the spot.

Rookie receiver Malcolm Kelly remains out six games into the season. Zorn said he’s dedicating to doing all he can for Kelly, not wanting to put him on Injured Reserve without first exploring all options.

—To answer the burning question, here’s Zorn:

“I don’t think we overlooked this team at all. And I don’t think we’re gong to overlook any team. I think the statement we made a few weeks ago as we were beating Dallas, beating Philly…we were kind of in the middle of the pack. I don’t think we saw ourselves as an elite team strutting our stuff, walking in and saying we’re awesome. I think we just went and tried to win the game. We gave everything we had yesterday.“

Up next is the Cleveland Browns (1-4), who face the New York Giants tonight.
