Welcome to Memorial Stadium

You are looking—LIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!—at Memorial Stadium, which will be a sea of red (with a few black dots) tonight. There was a movement this week to have fans wear all black, but it appears as though red remains the majority. It seemed strange anyway that Nebraska would want to depart from its traditional red for the biggest game so far under first-year coach Bo Pelini.
On the way in, I passed display cases full of relics from Nebraska’s rich history: national championship trophies, old helmets, Tommie Frazier’s No. 15 jersey—that classic mid-‘90s look of mesh with the little holes in it. These words are on the facade of the stadium: NOT THE VICTORY BUT THE ACTION : NOT THE GOAL BUT THE GAME : IN THE DEED THE GLORY. Looking at it gives you chills. Across the street, a billboard for a bank features a picture of the national championship trophy, along with: “The journey begins ... “
Tremendous view from up here in the press box, the great expanse of Nebraska unfolding in front of me, a straight-shot view to the horizon blocked only by the stray grain elevator. Just a few minutes ago, Nebraska’s students poured out of the tunnel entrances, like Pamplona’s bulls, and filled the bleachers. Good job by Nebraska having a first-come, first-serve for its student section.
Kickoff in a half hour. Enjoy.
