Here’s what will appear in tomorrow’s print edition on Tech’s basketball commitment ...
Virginia Tech’s men’s basketball team has received its first commitment for the Class of 2008. It came from Victor Davila, a 6-8, 235-pound power forward from Starmount High in Hamptonville, N.C.
Davila committed Thursday, choosing Tech over Wake Forest, Clemson, Iowa State and Charlotte, said Donnie Livengood, who, along with his wife, became Davila’s legal guardians after he moved from his home country of Puerto Rico.
Davila knows Tech junior forward/guard A.D. Vassallo, who also is from Puerto Rico, but is not very close friends with him because Vassallo is three years older, Davila said.
Though Davila still is mastering English, Livengood said he is a good student, and that Tech coach Seth Greenberg did not bring up the possibility of Davila attending prep school.
When Davila was 14, he moved alone from his hometown of Canovanas to Miami.
“I decided to come over here,“ Davila said. “Better opportunity.“
After a year in Miami, he moved in with the Livengoods for his freshman year. Donnie is a longtime youth basketball coach and met Davila through the coaching network.
Tech originally had a commitment from shooting guard Shamarr Bowden for 2008 before both parties agreed Bowden could play sooner elsewhere.
