Tyrod Taylor to play Saturday: What it likely means
Darryl Slater
Sep 02, 2008

It has happened before, and it probably will happen again: I was wrong.

I wrote in this space earlier this week that Virginia Tech head coach Frank Beamer wouldn’t demote starting quarterback Sean Glennon in favor of Tyrod Taylor this week. And while Beamer’s announcement that Taylor and Glennon will split time isn’t an outright demotion, it’s clear that Glennon’s role will be minimized, at least in Saturday’s home opener against Division I-AA Furman, and almost certainly for the rest of the season. Just speculating here, but I wouldn’t be surprised that, if Taylor shines, he’s the starter and primary quarterback for the rest of the season.

You’d think that if Beamer is going to pull Taylor’s redshirt, he’d plan to give him significant snaps. It seems unwise to use another year of Taylor’s eligibility by splitting time with Glennon, as he did last season. Beamer did not specify how he plans to use Taylor and Glennon on Saturday, or throughout the rest of the season. And he didn’t say anything about Glennon’s role heading forward. He did say, to open his press conference, “I’m very hopeful Sean is gonna have a NFL career. That kind of tells you what we think about him and what his talents are.“

Was that a final farewell to Glennon? We’ll see.
