Two days to go

Don’t know about the rest of you, but I cannot wait for Saturday. I’ll finally have something tangible to write about, so maybe this blog will stray from the sophomoric low talk you’ve come to expect from it. But I doubt it very, very much.
Strictly football stuff today, gang. But first, a couple self-promoting shill jobs ...
1. Our college football preview section publishes tomorrow. It’s going to be written in English. Can’t promise you much beyond that. Seriously, though, deputy sports editor Steve Trosky—he’s like Dick Cheney except a lot poorer—busted his hump on this thing. So give it a read if you can. Our cover story theme is “All Eyes on Virginia Tech,” as the Hokies embark on a promising season after the April 16 shootings.
2. If you get a chance, check out our college football video cast. I had some fun filming this earlier with sports editor Mike Harris and Virginia beat writer and noted Media Gadfly Jeff White—both of whom looked very dapper, I must say. I was actually in Blacksburg when they filmed this and chimed in over the phone. I will spare you the description of what I was wearing when this footage was shot. I’m about to watch it for the first time, and my initial positive impression is that at least it doesn’t look like something one of my childhood friends shot in the audio/video room at Shenendehowa High.

On to less nonsensical things ...
Who will go into the game at quarterback Saturday if it’s a blowout? Cory Holt or Tyrod Taylor? Holt is the No. 3, Taylor the No. 2. But you’d think Tech’s coaches wouldn’t burn Taylor’s redshirt year by playing him in mop-up duty all year long. They could use the strategy they employed in 2005, when Sean Glennon was the No. 2 quarterback behind Marcus Vick, but Holt played all the garbage time as Glennon redshirted.
So anyway, the coaches haven’t said what they will do about this. Will it be a game-time decision?
“It’s not going to be a game-time [decision],” offensive coordinator Bryan Stinespring said. “It’s going to be a tomorrow at 9 o’clock time.”
That’s when Tech’s coaches have their staff meeting. By the time they leave the meeting at 10, they will have an answer about the quarterbacks.
“I think people think we’re kind of not answering the question, but it’s an important decision,” Stinespring said. “It’s one that we’re not going to hurry. ... It’s not a cut-and-dry decision. I think it’s one we labor over and we evaluate.”
I made the obvious point to Stinespring that they probably wouldn’t want to burn Taylor’s redshirt year on garbage time.
“That’s correct,” he said. “If all of a sudden the decision is made, and the guy’s going to play, he’s not going to play just to finish games per se. But you’re going to try to get him involved. That’s the big hang-up right now.”
Speaking of quarterbacks, Ike Whitaker used to play there. Now he’s a wide receiver. Here’s what Stinespring had to say about him ...
“We anticipate him playing. There’s no time period on when he’s going into the game, no situation that he’s going to go into the game. Obviously, if we were in a two-minute [situation], that’s not what he needs to be doing right now. But if we can get him in the game and be controlled about what you’re asking him to do, then I think you’re in a good position.”

Tech head coach Frank Beamer said his team will practice in sweats and helmets tomorrow—one final tune-up for Saturday.
He brought the kickers into Lane Stadium for practice today, as he usually does during game weeks. The decision about who will handle kickoffs—a more important part of college football this year, with teams kicking from the 30-yard line, rather than the 35—is still up in the air ... pun very much intended. The competition is between seniors Jud Dunlevy and Jared Develli, a three-year starter.
“They both have their moments,” Beamer said. “I’m going to visit with Jared Develli tomorrow. We’ll decide Friday probably.”
