If you read today’s column, maybe you want to learn more about the hunting and fishing opportunities at Buggs Island Lake (known officially as John H. Kerr Reservoir). If so, you’ve come to the right place. First, you should stop by the Website of my guides Eddie Griggs and Martin Hardy Jr.—- http://www.vaeliteoutdoors.com. These guys are extremely skilled woodsmen. Trust me, I’ve seen their trophy wall.
Let’s start with hunting: Much of the land around the lake—55,000 acres—is managed, like the lake itself, by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. This is one of the great things about the place, there are very few houses on much of the lake shore. On about 40,000 of those acres hunting is allowed during the applicable seasons.
This site is a good place to start for information on the lake. It includes this link to the hunting opportunites available at the federally managed wildlife management areas around the lake.
As for fishing, the DGIF maintains some good information on the management of the Buggs Island Lake fishery. Click here for that.

Here are Griggs and Hardy with a client who had just taken his first turkey on a farm in Prince George County.

While far be it from me to tell anyone they don’t need a new gun but the reality is for many first time turkey hunters their current shotgun will work just fine. ...
