UPDATE: Torrance player taken off field on stretcher
Eric Kolenich
Jul 30, 2010

The game between Torrance, Calif. and Western Branch, Va. was delayed about 30 minutes when Torrance player Matthew Diederich was taken off the field on a stretcher.

Diederich was running backwards, attempting to catch a fly ball, when he fell backwards and landed on his neck. He said he felt pain in his neck, so he was kept on the field until an ambulance arrived.

Diederich, who won the home run derby yesterday, was sitting upright and talking to his teammates as he was taken off the field. Diederich did not appear to be wearing a neck brace as he exited the field to a standing ovation.

UPDATE:Diederich was released later in the evening with only a sprain. He is expected to play today.
