Charlottesville’s Adam Nelson needed just one throw Friday morning in the Olympic shot put competition to advance to tonight’s finals and his chance for the gold medal he has long sought.
“One and done, it’s the best way to do it, that’s all it took,“ Nelson said afterwards.
He said he’s nursing a sort left rib cage injured in training on Monday.
“It’s a situation of mind over matter,“ he said. “If you mind, it doesn’t matter.“
Nelson, 33, in his third Olympics, threw the 16-pound ball 67 feet 6 inches, more than enough to qualify for the event that could produce a U.S. sweep.
He’s won two silver medals in his two previous Games.
One stop he’ll make before tonight’s finals: he’ll visit with his persona hynotherapist.
“He helps me get my mind set on what matters the most,“ Nelson said. -
