TD Olympics Blog: Hoff struggles again, but not Phelps
Jay Weiner, Olympics correspondent

They say that even numbers are the tough ones at the Olympics.

Second and fourth.

Katie Hoff, the former Williamsburg swimmer, came to China thinking about six medals, maybe six golds.

Not happening. She finished fourth today in the 200-meter freestyle.

Meanwhile, Michael Phelps, the monster, splashed to his fourth gold of the Games, this time in the 200-meter butterfly and made history. It was his 10th career gold.

According to the U.S. Olympic Committee, his 10th breaks a tie with four other athletes - Paavo Nurmi (FIN), athletics; Mark Spitz (USA), swimming; Carl Lewis (USA), athletics; and Larissa Latynina (URS), gymnastics. It is his 12th medal overall, which ties him with Jenny Thompson (swimming) for the most Olympic medals in the career of an American athlete.
