Standout wide receiver Nixon reopens recruitment
Michael Phillips
Aug 09, 2011

Norfolk Christian wide receiver Mario Nixon, one of the state’s top high school prospects, could be switching sides in the state’s most significant football rivalry.

Nixon had previously committed to Virginia Tech, but on Saturday was seen taking in practice in Charlottesville at the University of Virginia. Three of his Norfolk Christian teammates this year have committed to the Cavaliers - he was the lone Hokie.

Amid reports that he was reconsidering his college decision, Virginia Tech rescinded his scholarship offer. Offers and commitments are non-binding until National Signing Day, when scholarship offers may be formally presented.

That leaves the Cavaliers as the favorites to land Nixon’s services, something that could happen by the end of the night, as the coaching staff in Charlottesville is feeling optimistic. If he inks with the Wahoos, it could be enough to give Mike London’s staff the recruiting victory in the state this year.

A similar situation happened last year when tight end Darius Redman switched from U.Va. to Tech. after committing to the Cavaliers. With the Hokies recently juggling their recruiting staff to better compete in the state, Nixon’s decision will be more fuel for the rivalry fire.
