Virginia Tech senior center Ryan Shuman yesterday was named ACC offensive lineman of the week after having a season-high seven knockdown blocks in Saturday’s 35-30 win at Nebraska. The Hokies rushed for 206 yards and accumulated a season-best 377 total yards.

Wide receiver Xavier Boyce (left knee) and defensive end Bruce Taylor (left shoulder) will undergo surgeries, Tech announced yesterday. Both are true freshmen backups who have played on special teams. Neither played at Nebraska. Boyce also missed the previous two games.

Six other Hokies are already out with season-ending injuries. The only starter in that group is sophomore rover Davon Morgan, a Varina High graduate, who tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee at Nebraska.

The other players have already undergone season-ending surgeries are sophomore free safety Ron Cooper, from Meadowbrook (ACL); junior fullback Kenny Younger, from Mills Godwin (knee); junior receiver Brandon Dillard (Achilles); true freshman defensive end Joe Jones (shoulder); and true freshman receiver Marcus Davis (shoulder).

Tech’s men’s and women’s basketball teams will host Late Night with the Hokies on Oct. 17 at 9 p.m. in Cassell Coliseum. The teams will participate in a one-hour program that includes a dunk contest, 3-point contest and half-court shot for a fan to win money. Afterward, the men’s team will participate in a brief scrimmage. Admission is free, and the first 4,000 fans will receive a T-shirt.

Now some stuff from Beamer’s teleconference with reporters this morning ...

On Davon Morgan, who suffered a season-ending knee injury at Nebraska—“I think we’re gonna miss his personality. I think he’s a guy who will brighten your day for you. He was very positive coming home on the plane.“

On whether the plane was rockin’ on the way home—“I found that I’m too old to rock at like 4, 5 o’clock in the morning. The young guys might have been all right, but the old guys, they were looking for sleep.“

On junior Dorian Porch, who will take over for Morgan as the starting rover—“I think now that he’s gonna be the starter his attention to detail will intensify.“

On juinor Matt Reidy, who will back up Porch—“Probably not as fast as you might want, but certainly he’s a heady guy and a good football player.“

On Nebraska’s 88-yard punt return for a touchdown—“We had a good kick. Our head hunter missed a tackle early, which I thought he had a legitimate shot to make. Then we didn’t play the sideline like we normally do. That sideline is an extra guy. We had five guys from the punt returner to the sideline, which is about 5 yards. Rather than keeping your angle and playing your position on the ball, we lost our position on the ball. We’re gonna cover that today. We’re usually pretty good about that. We lost our leverage on the football.“
