Since we’re on a special-teams kick….

The main point I wanted to make was about the team’s punter, and that post is directly below this one. But since we’re crunching the numbers, let’s take a look at Shaun Suisham…
0-29 yards: Suisham is a perfect 5/5 this year, and 20/20 in his career
30-39 yards: He’s 5/7 this year, 19/24 career
40-49 yards: 9/13 this year, 20/28 career
50+ yards: 1/3 this year, 3/7 career
It’s somewhat interesting to note that teams playing the Redskins have made every field goal they’ve tried from 49 yards or less this season (17/17). So we’re not dealing with any crazy muddy-field situations here. That’s also the sort of stat head coaches hate to see, because it means that sometimes luck isn’t on your side.
But Suisham is relevant these days because he’s missed a kick in his last three games. The only historical basis we have for comparison is last year (his other full NFL season), and Suisham proved to be mostly clutch in the later half of the season. He missed a 50+ yarder against Dallas, and had one bizarrely-bad day against the Bears (1 for 3), but other than that was perfect in the final eight regular-season games.
So it will be interesting to keep an eye on him down the stretch. He said that he’s keeping the same approach he did last year, which would seem to rule out having a “dead leg,“ but if he missed one on Sunday, the Redskins brass might come looking for answers.
