Richmond’s Most Wanted

CHARLOTTESVILLE—U.Va.’s basketball game against visiting Florida State ended at about 3 p.m. Saturday.  But Cavaliers coach Dave Leitao didn’t head home after his team’s 73-70 victory.  There was somebody special he wanted to see at John Paul Jones Arena.

At the top of U.Va.’s recruiting wish list for 2008-09 is 6-9 Ed Davis, whose father, Terry Davis, starred at Virginia Union University and had a long NBA career.  Ed Davis is a junior at Benedictine High in Richmond.

U.Va.’s new arena was the site of the Charlottesville Shootout, a Saturday night doubleheader.  Benedictine met Blue Ridge in the first game, and national powers Oak Hill Academy and Montrose Christian clashed in the second.

NCAA rules prohibited Leitao from speaking to high school players at the JPJ, but Virginia’s second-year coach was allowed to watch both games.  He spent much of the opener talking to Benedictine’s headmaster, John McGinty.  Leitao later exchanged high fives and handshakes with several of the students who make up the Cadets’ raucous cheering section.

Davis didn’t have one of his better games, and many of his teammates had off nights, too.  Still, Benedictine played well enough to edge Blue Ridge 52-47, with Davis contributing eight points, 13 rebounds, three assists, three blocked shots and one steal.  He was 2 for 10 from the floor—two of his dunk attempts went in and then out—and 4 for 7 from the line.

In the second game, Oak Hill beat Montrose Christian 74-65.
