Recruiting updates

CHARLOTTESVILLE – Lots happening tonight as Florida and Oklahoma play for at least a share of the national title.

Jamie Oakes of CavsCorner.com is reporting that Oday Aboushi, a heralded offensive lineman from Xaverian High in Brooklyn, N.Y., has committed to U.Va.  His commitment came a day after another standout 12th-grader, Hunter Steward of Virginia Beach’s Kellam High, chose Virginia.  Steward, though, is likely to spend the 2009 season at Fork Union Military Academy before enrolling at U.Va. in 2010.

Aboushi (6-6, 300 pounds) picked Virginia over Rutgers.  He also considered Boston College, to which he’d originally committed before changing his mind.

Also, the Daily News Record is reporting that Harrisonburg High senior Alex Owah no longer plans to play football at U.Va.

Owah, a tailback, in December 2007 became the first player to commit to Virginia for 2009.  His transcript is an issue for U.Va., however, and Owah said he won’t clear admissions there.

In a written statement he apparently hand-delivered to the Harrisonburg newspaper, Owah said, “Though I will meet all of the NCAA eligibility requirements to be admitted into a Division I football scholarship program, I will fall short of the rigid U.Va. admissions requirements due to a class that I am currently retaking while working to improve my SAT scores. Due to these circumstances I am making myself available to other schools that had expressed interest in me prior to my verbal commitment with U.Va.”
