Quick hits from Beamer’s Monday teleconference

Let’s get this quarterback-related stuff out of the way first. Virginia Tech head coach Frank Beamer addressed it in his opening statement on today’s teleconference. “While we’re figuring out this quarterback situation, I’m not going to talk about it anymore,“ he said. “I’ve asked [Sean Glennon and Tyrod Taylor] not to talk about it. I think we need to turn all of our attention toward Georgia Tech.“
The only time Beamer addressed the quarterbacks during the rest of the call was when he was asked if Glennon’s success the past two seasons against the Insects would factor in to the staff’s decision this week. “I think the whole thing factors in, but it’s a different defensive scheme,“ Beamer said (more on Georgia Tech’s new defense below).
Did Glennon’s candid remarks after the game have anything to do with him being muzzled this week? “No, I just think we spend all of our time talking about quarterbacks, and I want to talk about Georgia Tech,“ Beamer said.
OK, then, let’s do that.
Beamer said playing a team like East Carolina, which runs some option, helps prepare the Hokies for Georgia Tech, which is running a triple-option offense under new head coach Paul Johnson. But Beamer thinks Georgia Tech’s offense “hits a little quicker” than the option plays used by other teams.
As for Georgia Tech’s defense, it blitzed a lot under former defensive coordinator Jon Tenuta, who is now the assistant head coach for defense at Notre Dame. Georgia Tech’s new defensive coordinator is Dave Wommack. A 28-year career assistant, he coached linebackers last season at Southern Mississippi and was defensive coordinator at Arkansas from 2002-04. Beamer said his defense is “more diverse” than Tenuta’s was. This new Georgia Tech defense blitzes out of almost of all of its fronts, Beamer said.
A couple other items ...
- Beamer said he’s not concerned that Tech has just one sack in the first two games. A lot of that has to do with the way the Hokies’ first two opponents, East Carolina and Furman, played, he said. ECU’s Patrick Pinkney is a shifty quarterback. Tech didn’t blitz that much against Furman, and Beamer said Paladins quarterback Jordan Sorrells got the ball away quickly.
- Beamer also isn’t too worried that his starting defensive tackles, John Graves (Meadowbrook) and Cordarrow Thompson, have just two tackles this season—both by Thompson. “I think those will come,“ Beamer said. “They’ve been around the football.“
- Tailbacks Kenny Lewis Jr. and Darren Evans have received the bulk of the carries so far this season. Lewis has 25, Evans 23. Josh Oglesby and Jahre Cheeseman each have four. Look for Oglesby to possibly get more carries in the coming weeks. “I keep thinking Oglesby is gonna break out of there,“ Beamer said. “He had a great week of practice last week. I still think he’s going to figure in there.“
Forget about hearing anything quarterback-related for the time being ... Tech prepares for a very different offense ... Beamer would like to get Oglesby in the mix at tailback ...
