TALLADEGA, Ala.—It’s not unusual for second-tier drivers to compete at Talladega Superspeedway. But today’s qualifying was rather surprising. The top 11 qualifiers were all non-Chase drivers—including polesitter Travis Kvapil, who qualified with a speed of 187.364 mph.
Carl Edwards, second in the points standing behind leader Jimmie Johnson, had the best speed among Chase qualifiers. Edwards will start 12th after completing the 2.66-mile circuit with a speed of 186.507.
Johnson will start 20th and South Boston’s Jeff Burton (17th) are the only Chase contender who will begin the Amp Energy 500 in the top 20. Johnson turned in a qualifying speed of 186.224 mph while Burton posted a speed of 186.318.
Casey Mears, whose car was driven by Brad Keselowski during Friday’s practice, will start on the front row after qualfiying with a speed of 187.295. Aric Almirola (187.265) and Regan Smith (187.181) will occupy Row 2.
