Paging Mike Goforth

Mike Goforth, Tech’s trainer, is always a big help when it comes to breaking down injuries and other medical things (that’s the clinical term). Here’s what he had to say about several topics ...
- Rover Davon Morgan suffered a complete tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, but even if it were a partial tear, Morgan still would have surgery.
- As it pertains to Morgan’s situation, the NCAA gives medical hardship waivers to players who have played four games or fewer. Since Morgan has played five, it’s unlikely he will get the waiver. Last year, the limit was three games, but the NCAA made its four-game limit retroactive, so Tech tight end Chris Drager was able to obtain the waiver. Drager, a tight end, was a true freshman last season and tore his ACL in the season’s fourth game.
- On whether defensive end Bruce Taylor and receiver Xavier Boyce, true freshmen both, are out for the season (Taylor has a sprained left shoulder, Boyce an injured left knee): “I’m not so sure about Bruce yet. More than likely, that’s the way he’s leaning. We’re still doing some testing on him. I don’t see a reason why they wouldn’t [redshirt]. If this thing keeps lingering, there’s no use trying to put them back out there, especially not Boyce.“
- More on Boyce’s injury: “Boyce has got a cartilage injury on the end of his bone that he had repaired in high school,“ Goforth said.
- More on Taylor’s: “He’s tried to keep it quiet from us because he wanted to play,“ Goforth said. “It’s a typical freshman type thing that I’d have wished we’d have known sooner.“
