NCAA bound?
Mike Harris
Jan 28, 2007

NCAA tournament excitement is starting to build in Blacksburg, as well it should after the Hokies moved to 6-1 in the ACC and 16-5 overall by winning at Georgia Tech.
Tech is now 12-2 since its shaky 4-3 start, a beginning to the season that seems a distant memory now.  The way the Hokies have played to open ACC play, they’ve rendered that start moot when it comes to postseason play.
It’s all there for them now.  Tech hasn’t been to the NCAA tournament since 1996.

What has to happen?
Tech has nine games remaining, all in the league.  Five are at home.  Four are on the road.
Three victories MAY be enough for an at-large bid.  Four more, which would mean a 10-6 record and 20 victories overall, should make it a lock.

Tech has two games against N.C. State, including one at home Wednesday.  Those figure to be the easiest of the remaining games, though Tech coach Seth Greenberg would cringe at the thought of anyone calling an ACC game easy.  It has two games against Boston College, which figure to be very tough.  It has two against Virginia, which did its NCAA chances a big favor with the big comeback victory at Clemson.  It has one game left against North Carolina, Miami and Clemson.

Barring a collapse, four victories in those nine games isn’t a lot to ask.  Six victories in those nine games isn’t out of the question, an accomplishment that would reward Tech with a very good seed n the NCAA tournament.

Tech guard Zabian Dowdell said “the experience is starting to show” a couple of weeks ago when the Hokies won at home against then-No. 1 North Carolina.  He was right then and, assuming it continues to show, Tech is NCAA-bound.
