Mountain biking scene gets a jolt

My column in today’s T-D is about the new Virginia Off-Road Series, set up by local enthusiasts Woody Elliott and Jared Stangl, that will award points in 19 local mountain bike and other off-road races and crown season-ending champions in seven categories—Beginner, Sport and Expert for men and women and also Team. It’s a great idea and one they hope will add a little excitement to the local racing scene.
One of the things I didn’t get to mention in the column is that there is a similar series in the Philly area that’s been going on for about 5-6 years. That’s what Stangl and Elliott are shooting for. It’d be great to see the VORS reach that level of interest and prestige in Virginia. Considering how big the outdoor sports scene is getting in Richmond and throughout the state, I think it’s a goal that’s well within reach.
By the way, the above pic was shot by Jesse Peters during last Saturday’s first Camp Hilbert race. It’s of yours truly moments before I busted my chain.
