More on VCU’s latest 2011 recruit, Pierria’ Henry:
Tim Pearrell
May 12, 2010
His first name rhymes with Perrier. His mother liked the mineral water, he said.
Henry said doctors told him if he’d waited much longer to get emergency treatment for the blood clot in his leg, he could have had lost the leg or died.
He can’t bear weight on the leg for two months but expects to be fully recovered in six months, in time for basketball season. He is being home-schooled now.
“It did make me appreciate things even more. I look at life differently now. You never know what tomorrow brings. You never know when the last time is you get to speak to anybody. I make sure my last words to everybody are, ‘I love you.’”
On not staying in state:
“I’m sure some people are surprised. But my thing is, if you really love me and care and support me like you say you do, the whole thing is, I’m going to college. I’m getting an education.”
From South Charleston High assistant coach Cliff Jackson, who said Henry can play point or shooting guard and noted he played some on the interior this season because the team lacked size:
“In the long run, I think they’ve gotten themselves a pretty darn good player. The last two years Pierria’ has fiddled with football. He was getting some decent football looks, too. I just wonder how good Perry could be in a year-round, 12-month basketball situation.
“When he gets that individual attention, I just think his offensive skills will just get so much better.”
“He’s such a great defender. [Recruiters] liked his ability to play the point and score a little bit, but they were just amazed at how he defended and his willingness to play hard the whole time.”
“Probably his biggest strength is his competitiveness. He’s a go-getter and refuses to lose.”
“His leadership was very valuable this year. He leads by example. He’s not a very boisterous person. He just pretty much leads by his play and his competitiveness.”
Henry averaged 16 points, 8 rebounds and six assists for a team that made it to the state semifinals.
“He is totally a team player. Don’t let his [relatively modest scoring] numbers fool you.
“There were nights we had to get on him for not scoring. He gets other people involved. He had games where he only took 8-10 shots a game. I think the most he ever took in one game was 21.
“He is a very unselfish player.”
