More on Tyrod Taylor
Darryl Slater
Aug 21, 2007

Here is some extra stuff from the story that will appear in tomorrow’s print edition about true freshman Tyrod Taylor being named the backup quarterback ...

- Former No. 2 quarterback Ike Whitaker, now a full-time receiver, also will work with the punt block and return teams, coach Frank Beamer said. Whitaker, a redshirt sophomore, could be one of Tech’s receivers of the future, because the Hokies’ top four receivers—Eddie Royal, Josh Morgan, Justin Harper and Josh Hyman—are all seniors.

- Beamer on Whitaker being stretched thin by practicing at quarterback and receiver: “I think he needs to do that full-time. We thought we could let him work at quarterback and let him do wide receiver. We felt he was kind of in the middle on both of them. I just think he needed to put his full attention and strength to one.”

- Beamer said he’s not sure if he’ll use a similar plan to 2005, when Sean Glennon was the No. 2 behind Marcus Vick, but Cory Holt appeared in garbage time, thus preserving Glennon’s redshirt. In this case, there’s no reason to burn Taylor’s redshirt on garbage time, so the 2005 strategy remains a viable option.

- Asked if Taylor could beat out Glennon as the starter, Beamer said, “We’re going to put Tyrod at two, let him work, and then make an evaluation. I think after that evaluation, we’ll see where we are at that time.”

- Whitaker on his progress at receiver (today was his first day working full-time at receiver): “Today, I was dropping balls left and right, but I was crisp on all my routes. When it’s just quarterbacks and receivers, I’m catching everything. But actually getting into team periods, going through my routes and catching balls has been difficult.”

- Taylor, who isn’t very outspoken in interviews, on what he has taken from playing well in scrimmages: “I’ve always had confidence, but playing at a college practice or scrimmage gave me more confidence.”

- Quarterbacks coach Mike O’Cain on his impressions of Taylor: “He’s kind of easy-going. His personality is not all over in the wind. He’s not tremendously excitable. He just kind of goes about his business, and I like that.” There will be some more O’Cain stuff in tomorrow’s story.

That’s all for now, gang. Later.
