More on Augustus Gilchrist

Yes, I know Tyrod Taylor is now the starting quarterback, and I will get to that later. (There’s already a short story on our main page.) But here’s this for now ...
Virginia Tech athletic director Jim Weaver was kind enough to call me back for the story on men’s basketball recruit Augustus Gilchrist being released from his letter of intent. We already ran something on Gilchrist last week, but here’s what Weaver had to say a few minutes ago ...
- Weaver said Gilchrist asked for his release in the last week of August, and Tech promptly granted it on Aug. 31.
- Weaver said releases from letters of intent cannot be conditional in terms of what colleges the player can now compete for. So this is a clean break.
- “I think after we put our collective heads together, it made sense for everybody to move on,“ Weaver said.
Tech could have forced Gilchrist to wait until November for his letter to be voided. At that point, other colleges could have pursued him. Now, other colleges can pursue him, and he could possibly enroll in January. (Not sure of application timelines, but he might have been able to enroll in January at another school even if Tech made him wait until November to have the letter voided.)
Next entry: So apparently there's this guy named Tyrod Taylor ...
