Malcolm Delaney addresses his big decision
Darryl Slater
May 05, 2010

Malcolm Delaney spent parts of Tuesday addressing his potential NBA future ... sort of.

In a series of posts on his Twitter page (twitter.com/foe23), Virginia Tech’s point guard and the ACC’s leading scorer last season typed about working out for NBA teams this week and the projections he wouldn’t be selected in the league’s June 24 draft. (By the way, “foe” is short for “family over everything.”)

Delaney has declared for the draft but hasn’t hired an agent, thus preserving his ability to return for his senior season. Saturday is the deadline for underclassmen who declared to pull their names out of the draft.

A look at some of what Delaney wrote, with some explanations ...

* rise n grind… tryna figure out if i wana shoot before or after class.. det in 2 days, portland in 3..

(Multiple teams can send reps to these workouts, so this doesn’t necessarily mean Delaney will be working out only for the Detroit Pistons and Portland Trail Blazers. Also, as Hokies coach Seth Greenberg noted after the season, Delaney won’t have much time to make his decision, because underclassmen can’t work out for teams when their school is in session. Tech’s classes end Wednesday.)

* Can’t wait to get out here. Go get some shots up, and chill for today. Need to save my legs for these next few days. Cud b life changing

(Presume he is talking about getting out of class or something, not leaving Tech, based on what he wrote later, as you will see below.)

* big decisions.. people on the outside lookin in think im not ready. they. look at too many websites.. lol.. i work too hard not to make it

(Several websites that project the draft do not have Delaney getting selected.)

* In response to a question from one of his Twitter followers about what kind of feedback NBA teams were giving him: total opposite of what websites say is all ima say.. very little bad and alot of good, some great.. lol.. jus some hints

* the decision i make is for ME… not school, not family or friends… on that note, im thinkin bout goin to red lobster.. lol

* n for people that keep askin. NO I DIDNT MAKE A DECISION YET. not even thinkin bout it til sat, SO STOP ASKIN. done answerin the same ? lol

(Seems as though Delaney plans on taking all the time he is given to decide whether to stay or go.)

Anyway, that obviously isn’t a complete picture of the situation that is going to unfold over the next four days, but it does offer some insight into Delaney’s thoughts. Will be interesting to see how it all turns out.
