Leftovers from today
Darryl Slater
Sep 11, 2007

Just got back from seeing “3:10 to Yuma.“ Awesome, as are most Christian Bale flicks. Check it out if you get a chance.

As promised, I’m passing along some leftover quotes from today, first from Sean Glennon, who again was a stand-up guy when he came out and spoke with the media. He did it after the Chick-fil-A Bowl last year, after the blowout at LSU last Saturday. From my encounters with this guy, I don’t have a bad word to say about him. He’s become an honest, forthcoming spokesman for the team, especially in the wake of the April 16 tragedy (he went to high school with the gunman).

Before I get to what he said, he noted that he would consider transferring if he didn’t regain his starting role. He is set to graduate in December, but the NCAA is getting rid of the rule that lets players who graduate in four years transfer to another Division I-A school without sitting out a year. So Glennon would have to transfer to a I-AA school if he wanted to play somewhere else next season.

Now on to some of Glennon’s quotes ..

On being demoted—Five quarters, I don’t think you can judge a whole season on, especially that second game. Not much anyone could do there.

On his conversation with Frank Beamer—I told him what I was feeling, and he stuck by his decision.

Does he see a future for himself here if he’s not the starter?—That would be a tough one. I’m hoping that this team will realize they need me sometime this season. If they don’t, then obviously, I’m going to have to have a talk with my parents and coaches and see what’s best.

Does he ever feel like the fans truly embraced him as the starter?—I think the majority did, but the silent minority are unfortunately usually the most vocal. I’ve gotten countless e-mails from people every game, every day. Right now, I’ve gotten a lot supporting me. I wasn’t the prototypical Virginia Tech quarterback. I don’t run a 4.3, and fans are used to seeing that. So maybe they were a little biased toward me from the beginning.

Does he feel like he was abandoned?—In a way, I guess I do. Five quarters seems to quick to just give up on someone after a year starting. To get the MVP in the spring, do well here in the scrimmages in camp, the coaches are gonna do what they think is best. I felt like it was very rushed almost. Maybe they had a plan to play Tyrod the whole time, because it just doesn’t seem like the season played out long enough for them to really say: All right, Sean’s not our guy.

On working with the second string today—It’s a blow to your pride. It hurts. You don’t want to show it out here, and I’m going to still come out here and play every day. But it hurts. It’s hard because I know some people don’t agree, but I think I can be a very good quarterback. I feel like I’m too good to be standing on the sideline. It’ll be hard.

Where do you go from here?—I graduate in December. I hope the coaches realize that I need to be on the field this year. But if they don’t … I think a lot of programs would be willing to take me.

On potentially transferring—I don’t want to leave here, but I feel like I’m good enough to play on any team in this country.

On whether he felt like quarterbacks coach Mike O’Cain’s comments about him being the starter period were lip service—That was one of the things that I was most upset about. I just really felt like this year that with me being so much improved that they were going to really stick with me through thick and thin. Hopefully, there wouldn’t be too much thin. I never thought I would get the reigns taken from me this early on.

On him understanding the coaches made the decision because the line is bad—I’m not in a great spot right now. I won’t say that I’m completely against the coaches’ decision. I understand what they are getting at. So it’s just unfortunate that I’m put in a position where, because my legs don’t move as fast as Tyrod’s, I will not be playing.

QUOTES FROM FRANK BEAMER’S CONFERENCE CALL TODAY ...

I want to say this is really not a reflection on Sean. He’s put so much into his preparation. He’s such a competitor. I feel like with our football team, with our offense, Tyrod fits our personnel better right now. There’s no question we need to get our running game going. We feel like this is the direction that we need to go in. This is not easy for us. You’ve got to make decisions that you feel like are best for the football program.

You look at it from an overall situation, and I think Tyrod best fits the possibility of us becoming a really good offense right now.

Best fits in what sense?—What we have to do to I think be a good offense. I think people are going to force our quarterback to move whether we want him to move or whether we don’t. Our quarterback has got to move. Sean is certainly not bad. I think he’s better at throwing from a drop-back position than he is on the move.

On Glennon’s reaction—I met with Sean this morning. He was very disappointed, which I expected him to be. I feel for him, because he’s put so much into it. I tried to explain to him: It’s not a reflection on him as much as it is the status of our football team, our offensive football team. I just feel like Tyrod better fits us being a good offense. I firmly believe we can be a good offense. I think we’ve got good toughness up front, some guys that it means a lot to that are going to get better and better. I think we’ve got some skill outside. I think we’ve got some skills in our backfield. We’ve just got to put it together. It’s just a fact: We’ve got to run the ball better. We’ve got to be a better running football team.

On Taylor’s mobility being a factor in this decision—That certainly is a big part of it. You’ve got two good runners in your backfield [Taylor and Ore]. Certainly for a defense, defending two is a lot tougher than defending one.

On the decision-making process—We’ve given this a lot of thought. It wasn’t a quick decision. But at the present time, as we get ready to play the game this week, I think Tyrod gives our offense the best chance to be a really, really good offense. That’s what we’re shooting for.

On trimming the playbook for Taylor—I think we cut back on what we’re doing and do what we do efficiently and effectively.

On Glennon’s role now—He’ll help us be as good as we can be offensively, help Tyrod, stay ready. There’s some time during this season that he’s going to have to help this football team win. I think most seasons, that’s just the way it’s going to be. That second quarterback has got to help you win a football game. And I feel like that’s exactly what he’ll do. He’ll be right over there, doing what’s best for the football team and, when he’s called on, be ready to help us win a football game.

On not wanting to have a situation where Tyrod is looking over his shoulder—Tyrod is our quarterback. I’m not quick to pull a quarterback. I think those guys have got to work through some times, and if it’s a little rough, they’ve got to work through it. We didn’t make this decision quickly, and we’re not going to pull a quarterback quickly.

On how hard it is to play a freshman quarterback—I think it’s hard starting a freshman quarterback, but I do think Tyrod’s got some unique abilities. I think he’s poised. He just kind of does things naturally on the football field, in my opinion. I think he’s kind of unique to be in this position that we feel like he could start for this football team.

On the difference between playing a true and redshirt freshman at quarterback—I don’t think it’s easy on a true freshman. I do think it’s easier for a redshirt freshman, because he’s been there for a year, he’s gone through spring practice, he’s been through there all summer. But again, I think Tyrod’s got some unique abilities about him that make this possible.
