It’s a numbers game

CHARLOTTESVILLE – Virginia’s football program has 19 commitments for 2009, and Al Groh told reporters yesterday that he’s not planning to hold at 19. Jamie Oakes of www. virginia.rivals.com, in fact, reported today that U.Va. may well add a 20th recruit for 2009 this weekend.
Now, I wasn’t a math major, so I may be missing something, but it’s hard for me to see how U.Va. will have room for many more than 20 recruits, given that the NCAA limits teams in the Football Bowl Subdivision to 85 scholarship players per season.
I realize, of course, that Virginia usually has some unexpected attrition in the offseason, but can a coaching staff count on that when it figures how many recruits it can take? What if nobody flunks out or gets into off-the-field trouble?
My e-mail address is , so please let me know if you spot an error in the list below of the U.Va. players who’ll have eligibility remaining after this season. Some of the players who would be fifth-year seniors in 2009 are unlikely to be invited back, so that would open a few slots. But my list doesn’t include quarterback Jameel Sewell, cornerback Chris Cook or defensive end Sean Gottschalk, all of whom might play for Virginia next season.
Sewell and Cook were suspended from U.Va. for academic reasons last winter, but they’re expected back in January. Gottschalk has been on a leave of absence this season for personal reasons.
Players who almost certainly will be invited back to compete as fifth-year seniors in 2009 include cornerback Vic Hall, tailback Mikell Simpson, wide receiver Kevin Ogletree, fullback Rashawn Jackson, offensive tackle Will Barker and linebackers Aaron Clark and Denzel Burrell.
