Mar 12, 2010

GREENSBORO, N.C.—Virginia Tech jumped out to a 24-14 lead over Miami at the 9:39 mark of today’s second quarterfinal here at the ACC tournament. But the Hurricanes responded with 19-8 run and took a 33-32 lead on Cyrus McGowan’s wide-open 3-pointer with 2:22 left.

At half, the Hokies lead 37-35. They are shooting 46.9 percent. They shot 8 of 13 in the first 8:11. After that, they shot 7 of 19.

By the way, so much for Dorenzo Hudson’s injured right foot. He shot 5 of 11 in the first half and scored 15 points, most of any player on either team in the first half. He had 11 of Tech’s first 15 points.

Miami is shooting 51.7 percent. Just four teams shot better than 50 percent against the Hokies all season. Miami’s 63.2 percent in an 82-75 win on Jan. 31 tops the list.

Reggie Johnson, Miami’s 6-10 forward who played so well in the first round, is scoreless and has missed both of his shots. DeQuan Jones leads Miami with 11 points on 5-of-8 shooting.

One other notable item from the stat sheet: Tech is being out-rebounded 22-12.

Enjoy the second half.
