Golston goes down; Buzbee steps up

May 03, 2008

Day two of the Washington Redskins minicamp was not without a problem. Defensive tackle Kedric Golston injured his ankle late in the session. He was able to hobble to a spot behind the line of scrimmage, where his ankle was examined by the team’s athletic training staff and a large bag of ice was taped around his right ankle. Golston was taken from the field in a golf cart. The extent of his injury isn’t known yet. It will not be surprising if Golston watches the rest of the minicamp from the sidelines.

What’s tough for Golston is that three OTA (organized team activities) take place beginning Monday. Golston is a solid player who is in a backup role. He should be able to survive a few missed practices, especially this early in the off-season program.

Alex Buzbee is a young player to watch. The defensive end spent last season on the practice squad, and it says something about him that the Redskins never let him go in order to use his spot to look at other players. Buzbee, from Georgetown, has a good burst off the ball, and is making things difficult for the young tackles he’s matched up against. It’s not unusual to see No. 90 blowing into the backfield on passing plays. Quarterbacks don’t get touched during these practice sessions, but if they did, Buzbee would have several sacks over the past three practice sessions.

On Friday, defensive coordinator Greg Blache said the Redskins had some good, young defensive linemen no one knows about now. The important thing, Blache said, is that people know them in December and January. Buzbee might be one of those players.
