Glennon’s transfer options
Darryl Slater
Sep 11, 2007

Here’s something a little bit different than what I’ve been giving you lately on Quarterback Break-Up 2007 ...

Spoke to Tim Parker, Tech’s compliance guru, earlier today about Sean Glennon’s options for transferring. Now, it should first be noted that Glennon said he wants to stay at Tech and try to win back his job, but he’d consider leaving if he didn’t regain his starting spot by next season. It also should be noted that Glennon has not approached Parker about the possibility of transferring. Parker said Glennon has talked to him in the past about compliance issues, adding that Glennon knows he’d have to come to him for a transfer situation. So who really knows how serious Glennon is about leaving.

“We as a department, we don’t want the young man to leave,“ Parker said. “I’ve got to believe that if he was serious about it, he would come up and say, ‘Hey, what are my options?‘“

But the issue is out there, so we ought to get it straight, if only in a hypothetical sense.

- Glennon cannot transfer to a Division I-AA school because the NCAA, as of August 2006, requires that players transferring from I-A to I-AA have at least two years of eligibility left. If you recall, former Tech running back Keith Burnell spent his final year at Delaware. Can’t do that anymore. The NCAA’s rationale, Parker said, was that “so there was no more of that hired-gun situation where a kid only comes in for year and leaves. Since Sean only has one year remaining, that rule is going to catch him.“

- Glennon probably won’t be able to transfer to a Division I-A school, unless he does it very soon. Here’s why: For the 2006-07 school year, the NCAA let I-A football, basketball and ice hockey players who graduated in four years play their fifth year for another I-A team without sitting out a year, which is usually required for such transfers. Utah cornerback Ryan Smith used this to transfer to Florida. The NCAA did away with that rule as of the beginning of this school year, because, Parker said, “Football coaches got up in arms, basketball coaches got up in arms. They got to their athletic directors [who helped get the rule reversed].“

- Here’s the only way Glennon could play for a I-A school next season (and this seems unlikely): Transfer in the next few days to a I-A school that uses the quarters system. Those schools often start later than schools on the semester system, which Tech and most colleges use. If Glennon gets to a quarters-system school by the 12th day of class, he could sit out a year at that school, then play next fall for the school. “I would imagine at this point those options are dwindling,“ Parker said.

- If Glennon wants to play football next season someplace other than Tech, he’ll probably have to go to Division II. But then again, he’s graduating in December (in three and a half years) with a finance degree. He could just go out into the world and get a regular job. Or he could declare for the NFL draft after this season, try his hand in pro football (NFL camp or arena ball) and, if that doesn’t work out, fall back on his degree. It’s not like he’s going to improve his pro stock by being the backup at Tech next season, if indeed that ends up being the case.

- Last point on this: Frank Beamer was asked in his weekly press conference today if Glennon’s demotion (and potential transfer) means Tech will have to look harder at trying to recruit a backup quarterback for next season. Beamer said he didn’t want to worry about that right now. But it’s a valid question, and, depending on how seriously Glennon talks to the staff about transferring, I wouldn’t be surprised if Tech’s coaches start pursuing a high school senior quarterback in the next couple months.
