Following up ...

I’m not inclined to make a big issue out of this, because in my mind, there really is no issue here.
I’ve received some comments and e-mails about the interview I posted here yesterday with Virginia Tech redshirt freshman tailback Josh Oglesby. And I just wanted to address two of those ...
- I did not bait Oglesby into saying anything. I didn’t even go into the interview expecting him to air his frustrations. I wanted to speak with him for a story I’m doing on Darren Evans, but before I asked him about Evans, I asked how he was doing. He began to mention his frustrations and I asked several follow-up questions. Then I asked him about Evans.
- At no point in the conversation did the words “off the record” come up. I stood there with my recorder and notepad and interviewed Oglesby—as I do for all of my interviews.
This is a pretty straightforward situation. While I completely understand why Oglesby is frustrated—and why some of you are peeved that he publicly expressed those emotions—it wasn’t my goal to get him in trouble or make people mad at him. I certainly appreciated his honesty, but I never gave him any indication that I wasn’t going to write what he said.
OK, enough of that. Just wanted to explain the reality of the situation.
Appreciate, as always, all who read and take time to leave comments in this space.

Not sure why they would find fault with you, but this post pretty much clarifies your perspective well.

Mr. Slater,
While I can see your point that you did not bait Oglesby, you could have helped him out by not printing that information. That’s the type of thing that’s going to possibly isolate him from his position group and coaches. I realize you need to drive readership with “insider” info, but in this instance perhaps simply suggesting to the player that he speak to his coach would have been the way to go (or even spoken to Coach Hite off the record and relayed the concern). I also don’t see how printing this helps you out going forward with the players or coaches.
I’m not a journalist, so my opinion on this isn’t a knowledgeable one, just one of a fan.
