Correction: Virginia Tech’s women’s soccer heading to Portland
Darryl Slater
Nov 15, 2009

I erred in a previous post, which I just deleted, when I wrote that Virginia Tech’s women’s soccer team would play Portland at UCLA this weekend in the NCAA tournament’s Sweet 16.

The third-seed Hokies will actually play second-seed Portland in Portland. Meanwhile, Virginia will play at top-seed UCLA. The Hokies advanced today by beating Dayton 3-1 in Dayton, two days after they beat Murray State in the first round, also in Dayton. This is their first Sweet 16 appearance. In two NCAA trips before this season, they were one and done both times.

Portland advanced by beating Washington 2-1, while UCLA hammered San Diego State 5-0 and Virginia beat fourth-seed Penn State 6-2. So if the Hokies beat Portland, they could either head west again and face UCLA in the Elite Eight or drive up the road to Charlottesville and meet the Cavaliers for the second time this season. In the regular season, Tech won at Virginia 2-1.

The Hokies have never played Portland. And this offer still stands: Five bucks of Monopoly money to the first person who can name Portland’s nickname without checking.

The Hokies are in the Sweet 16 for the first time and would play the winner of Virginia and UCLA in the Elite Eight.
