Colorado trip ends with mountain biking

It’s true what they say: All good things must come to an end. Be that as it may, some places are better than others for good things to end.
The above picture was taken in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains looking north. The mostly-frozen body of water to the west is Horsetooth Reservoir, which supplies Fort Collins, Colo. with its drinking water. This area is also honeycombed with hiking and biking trails. My wife and I and two friends, Jeff Rickard and Mary Hollowell, spent the last week visiting another set of friends, former Richmonders Shmulik Bachar and Jill Hanck, in Colorado. We did some downhill skiing early in the week, spent a day cross country skiing to and from a rustic cabin, then wound up the trip with a mountain bike ride in the foothills.
Needless to say, the riding is simply different in Colorado—too different, in my opinion, to compare to riding on the east coast. It’s rockier, with much less vegetation and much bigger climbs and downhills. At 6 or 7 thousand feet, it also offers far less oxygen for recovery after those climbs. I was sucking wind for a while when I got to the spot where I snapped this pic.
